"Jedan" is the word for "one" in Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian.
Jed is the oldest sibling of The Number Line, an experimental group of robots created by Dr. Robotnik. He is a combination of Shadow the Hedgehog from the Sonic series (being a modified Shadow android) and Dynamo from the Mega Man X series. As it turned out, Jed hardly took orders from the doctor, prefering to go by his own agenda and disspearing for days on end. He particularly loved the thrill of gambling and enjoying the flashy night life. This annoyed the doctor, who later decided to work on the second in the line, Zwei, in hopes of replacing Jed.
Zwei proved to be worse. He too ignored the doctor and also lived by his own rules. Unfortunately, unlike Jed, Zwei's own amusement came from destruction. When Jed found out about his new sibling, he immediately lost what little trust he had left in the doctor, but had enough sense to realize that his new brother was out of his creator's control. Feeling obligated, Jed decided to stop Zwei himself.
The two battled fiercely on several occasions, but in the end, it was a draw. Both suffered from a fatal blow, killing each other.
Jedan and Zwei were later revived by a unknown scientist (still trying to figure out who) without Robotnik's knowledge. The two now lay low, hiding their revival from their creator, not wanting to deal with him. By this point, their status as enemies was also reduced to intense rivals, although they'd rather just stay away from each other completely.
Jed now finds his home in Casino Night, becoming friends with a bartender Maverick named Copy Cat. It was here that he learned about Nightmare Souls and now dedicates his time collecting themfor the sole purpose of enhancing his power... by smoking them. 
(5/5/11 edit: Developing his character more, I've established that's not the case - he gathers them to keep them away from others who wish to use them for malicious purposes. ...I suppose he does take one for himself every once in a while, though... *end edit*)

Oh lawl. Jed's totally one of my faves.
And since it would be difficult to come up with a logical explaination as to how the hell MMX could mix with Sonic, The Number Line exists in a special world that combines many fictional universes with a giant, rewritten collective history, allowing them to all coexist with each other.
Yeah, it's crazy...

That's really cool. I love it a lot. And a very clever backstory for him too--I already like him
